The XFL through the years
- 2001 XFL โ Created by Vince McMahon's WWF and NBC, ran for one season with eight teams before folding.
- 2020 XFL relaunch โ Revived under new ownership including Vince McMahon, suspended after five weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 2023 XFL relaunch โ Relaunched under owners including Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia, completed a full season with eight teams.
- 2024 UFL merger โ The XFL merged with the USFL to form the United Football League (UFL) starting in 2024.
Rule innovations
- No fair catch โ Punt returners could not call a fair catch, a rule change aimed at increasing action.
- Distance-based conversions โ Teams chose 1, 2, or 3-point conversion attempts from varying distances instead of a standard extra point.
- Faster overtime format โ Used single-play alternating overtime rounds to shorten games compared to NFL overtime.
Other alternative leagues
- USFL (1983-1985, revived 2022) โ Originally featured future NFL stars like Herschel Walker before folding after a costly antitrust lawsuit.
- NFL Europe / WLAF โ NFL-backed developmental league that operated in Europe from 1991 to 2007.
- Alliance of American Football (AAF) โ 2019 spring league that folded after only ten weeks of its inaugural season.
